Impression
This hotel is overshadowed by the misery of its neighborhood: the area around Central Station and the red-light district right behind the hotel. It used to be one of the hotels of the Golden Tulip chain, which had a good reputation in the hotel business. A few years ago, this chain was taken over by the NH Hotels. This chain has lately been investing a lot of money in its hotels and this is clearly beginning to yield results. The NH Barbizon has also been given the necessary touch-ups and it can now once again make a good impression.

reception
The porters were waiting right outside the hotel to take our car to the underground parking lot. Do bear in mind that the hotel has only very limited parking facilities, so it is better to reserve a space in advance.

public areas
The public areas look nice. The lounge is a good enough place for waiting, but nothing more than that. The hotel also has a nice bar and it is clear that the hotel has paid a lot of attention to the public areas, but it would be going to far to call them special.

rooms
The rooms are fine and nothing is missing. If you are lucky, you will have a room at the front of the hotel with a nice view of Central Station. Unfortunately, it is not advisable to spend a long time looking out the window because you will no longer want to leave your room because of the neighborhood’s negative atmosphere, which can make you feel quite uncomfortable.

halls
The hotel is adjacent to an old church that is no longer in service. The hotel has made use of this by creating an underground passageway that leads directly to it. The church itself has been turned into a great hall where many parties are given. However, this hall is not very suitable for conferences as it consists of two separate floors. Moreover, some people will not be allowed to enter this hall for religious reasons, because there are still graves underneath the floor and going into this hall means walking over these graves, which can cause a big problem for Jews and Muslims.

situation
The location is fine if you are coming by train. If, however, you are coming by car it is a genuine disaster since you will have to face the extremely difficult traffic both in and around Amsterdam. For foreigners, this is certainly no picnic. And if you are still thinking of coming by car, then do not forget to make reservations for the parking lot. On the other hand, all the different kinds of public transport are at your disposal. It is very unfortunate indeed that the presence of the many junkies, prostitutes, pick-pockets and tramps has turned this neighborhood into a regular ghetto.
